OSC over USB cable on iOS

Dub Feb 14, 2016 05:36PM CET

Hello,

I am using Lemur on multiple iPads, and I need cable connections for reliability.
I am using OSC messages.
I saw in your specifications page that "OSC over cable" on Lemur iOS is possible, with your following comment :
"Yes (with USB tethering on cellular device)".

Could you be more specific on that point ?
If I buy an iPad Pro with cellular option, how does it then work ? Will I need to also have a cellular data plan activated to be able to have this OSC over cable function running ? (I won't have any use of Internet on this ipad only used for Lemur)

Or does the cellular version of the iPad Pro permit this OSC over cable function even if no SIM/data plan is present ?

Would you have a more complete requirement description and a detailed step-by-step description of how to set-up this OSC over cable on Lemur iOS on cellular device ?

Thank you !

See https://liine.net/wiki/lemur/connection/hardware/ios_usb

We have not extensively tested USB tethering, it's not possible for me to say if it requires a SIM/dataplan to be present. I believe the answer is 'no', but it's really a question for Apple and your service provider. Tethering is a feature that is wholly independant of Lemur.

Thank you for your response !

So the conclusion is :
- wifi has proven not to be reliable on stage
- usb tethering with cellular device is not possible (no connection on lots of stages around the world)

So, what solution, apart from jailbreaking, do you propose to have multiple iPads running Lemur ?
Thank you

I think I did not express myself clearly. As far as I know, a SIM/data plan is not required to enable tethering, but we have not tested this extensively. In theory, any cellular enabled iPad should be able to tether without additional requirements, but you should check with your service provider or Apple.

To use multiple iPads with OSC over a USB cable, I would recommend cellular-ennabled devices and check with Apple regarding the tethering feature.
